Mohammed Take The Wheel

Western Out, Country In

Dateline: Tehran, Iran (12/21/05)

As reported in Tuesday’s Seattle Times, hard-line President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has banned all Western music from Iran… a reminder of the 1979 Islamic Revolution when popular music was outlawed under the Ayatollah Khomeni… and an era which most historians point to as the kick-off for Cher’s just-concluded “Farewell Tour”.

“Blocking indecent Western music from the Republic of Iran Broadcasting is required,”… this according to a statement on that nation’s official website. “though Country is cool with us,” the site went on to explain. It seems that Iran’s President is a HUGE fan of Garth Brooks, and can often be heard around his palace humming the lyrics to the Country star’s big hit “I’ve Got Friends In Low Places”.

Surprisingly, another big Country hit by American Idol winner Carrie Underwood, "Jesus Take the Wheel", has swept the Islamic nation… albeit with a slight alteration of the song’s chorus by the state-run radio … to “Mohammed Take the Ox-cart”.

However, women are prohibited from carrying any tune in public. Hardliners being afraid that the voice of a woman soloist might arouse impure thoughts in men. Iran’s Minister of Culture explained, “The problem with Western music is not so difficult to understand… when most could agree that a performer like Christina Aguillera can create impure thoughts for even a cabbage.”

Queried as to whether this move to ban Western music might further chill relations between the U.S. and Iran, President Bush told D.C. reporters, “Regarding Iran’s rhetoric … hey, what can I say… they’ve got a darn good point with that Christina Aguillera thing.”
